Denture repairs and relines

Dentures do a lot of work every day, and they do not last forever without attention. A cracked plate, a chipped or lost tooth, a snapped clasp — these are all repairable. Because Peter works on site, your denture does not have to be posted away to an off-site laboratory and back.

Relines are the other common job. Your jaw keeps changing shape after teeth are removed, so a denture that fitted well two years ago can start to rock, rub or drop. A reline rebuilds the fitting surface against your gums as they are now, rather than as they were when the denture was first made.

If your denture is sore, loose or clicking when you eat, bring it in rather than reaching for a household glue. Over-the-counter repair kits usually make a proper repair harder and can damage the plate permanently.

Can you repair a broken denture?

Yes. Cracked plates, broken teeth and snapped clasps can usually be repaired, and because our prosthetist works on site you are not waiting on an off-site laboratory. Bring all the pieces with you, and avoid gluing it yourself — household glues make a proper repair much harder.

How often do dentures need relining or replacing?

Most dentures need a reline every few years as the jaw changes shape, and a full replacement somewhere around the five to ten year mark depending on wear. If yours is rocking, rubbing or clicking, that is usually a fit issue worth checking rather than something you have to put up with.

When a tooth is missing or part of a tooth needs to be removed, our team can fill the void left by using crowns and bridges.

Crowns

A crown is a ‘cover’ that is cemented to the top of a damaged tooth or dental implant and resembles a tooth that matches the surrounding teeth in colour and shape. Crowns are used to not only strengthen damaged teeth but restore confidence to our patient’s smiles.

Crowns may be needed when:

• A large filling is required but there is not enough tooth remaining
• A weak tooth is at risk of fracturing and needs strengthening

Bridges

Bridges may be recommended by our dentist if you are missing one or more teeth. Leaving gaps where teeth have been removed eventually results in the remaining teeth shifting or rotating into the empty space which may lead to gum disease and other issues. As such it is important that the gap is filled.

Bridges are porcelain or ceramic and resemble teeth just like crowns. However, unlike crowns, bridges are not cemented to a damaged tooth or implant but are instead cemented at both ends to the surrounding teeth (called abutments) causing the middle of the bridge to ‘bridge’ the gap between the teeth, avoiding the need to have a dental implant installed in the gap as is the case with crowns.
